| History
and Tour MacClay Leather Design is a small family owned and operated business dedicated to designing and producing original, top quality, handcrafted leather goods. It all started in the summer of 1972 with two friends living in a tent, tooling and staining leather on a picnic table. They soon opened their first leather shop. Out of those humble beginnings, Clay Rosenbarker has emerged a master designer craftsman in leather. Four retail stores and a small leather craft studio later, his designs were outselling anything they could buy for their stores. In the
early ‘80’s Clay began exhibiting his original designs in some of the
country’s best juried craft shows. In 1985 he sold his retail stores to
focus on producing his craft. He opened a leather craft studio in East
Petersburg, PA. where he continues to design and produce his work today
with the help of a small staff of dedicated craftsmen. He markets his
work through the studio store, at fine art and craft shows, and on the
internet. |

At the drawing table I transfer my ideas onto paper. As I make the patterns, I keep in mind such things as form, function and stress points. |
|
Next, I
take my patterns and cut the raw materials. We specialize in top quality
American cowhide tanned to be buttery soft. The best 10% of hides that
the tannery gets are specifically selected to produce this tannage. We
also use a water resistant, nearly indestructible nylon to line our products.
No built in obsolescence here! |
After all
materials are cut, skived, glued and otherwise prepared, we sew them with
a nylon thread that is 50% stronger than industry standard. |

Then we go to the bench for the final assembly: buckles on straps, snaps, reinforcing rivets, stuffing paper, etc. We use the best hardware available to us. Finally, we inspect the finished product for defects in workmanship and materials. |
